Summary

A trailblazer in providing access to Oxford University, this Victorian college offers space, tranquillity and on-site parking (subject to availability).

Introduction

St Hugh’s College offers bed and breakfast accommodation amid listed buildings and beautiful gardens. Its North Oxford location is next door to the city’s trendiest quarter, Jericho, and only a fifteen-minute walk or a short bus ride from Oxford’s museums, shops, bars and restaurants, making the College the perfect oasis of calm for students to live and study, and a great springboard for visitors to explorer the city.

St Hugh’s has a range of rooms available, from ensuite to basic. Visitors can opt for Edwardian heritage, with rooms in the Main Building (available full-time throughout the year), or, alternatively, there are ensuite rooms in the award-winning and environmentally sensitive Maplethorpe and Rachel Trickett Buildings, as well as premium bed and breakfast suites in The Dickson Poon University of Oxford China Centre Building, opened by His Royal Highness Prince William in 2014.

Also available are discounted single rooms in the Kenyon, Wolfson and MGA buildings, these are usually student rooms and offer an excellent taste of College life.

The College accommodation gives guests an interesting and affordable alternative to modern hotels, at the heart of one of the world’s top universities. All rooms are furnished and appointed as a typical scholar’s study bedroom, with the extra provision for visitors of bed linen, towels, toiletries, and tea and coffee making facilities.

History to the present day

Founded in 1886 by Elizabeth Wordsworth, the great niece of the poet. She named the College after one of his twelfth century predecessors, Hugh of Avalon, who was canonised in 1220.

Tread in the footsteps of such alumni as Aung San Suu Kyi, Barbara Castle and current Prime Minister Theresa May, and share in the real Oxford scholar’s experience, by staying at St Hugh’s.

Food and Drinks

The price of a stay also includes the College's famously generous full English cooked breakfasts (or a lighter Continental alternative if preferred), served in the traditional dining hall between 8.00am -10.00am, where guests can sit among current students and soak up the atmosphere.

There is also a beautiful landscaped picnic area, and an on-site coffee shop offering Asian fusion cuisine, deluxe drinks and pastries.

Grounds and gardens

The college has a tranquil fourteen acres of self-contained grounds, maintained to a very high standard by a team of full-time gardeners. There are ample lawns, borders, mature and specimen ornamental trees, all popular with the local birds and squirrels, making St Hugh’s one of the loveliest hidden delights of Oxford. There is even a croquet lawn in the summer. There is plenty of outside seating available in scenic spots, so guests can relax and enjoy the peace and quiet.

Very lovely staff who were willing to look into any enquiries I had and went to get me some extra pillows Lovely room and facilities, i love the tea and coffee in the room It was also nice to have the breakfast included and to get a great range of options too One of the best accommodations I’ve stayed at ??

I booked the room for 2 nights to attend a conference in a university venue as St Hugh's was an ideal location. I really enjoyed the experience of staying in the college with its beautiful gardens and great atmosphere - much more enjoyable than a hotel as well as a better price. So I have rated overall experience and VFM higher than facilities and so on. A couple of minor niggles - wifi was not great (kept cutting out and needed to reconnect) and I would have ideally liked a bedside table and lamp. But the room was clean and had everything essential for a comfortable short stay.

Good room and facilities.

Lovely stay in a very special place
Miss Elizabeth L

We loved it. The gardens are not only extensive but beautifully maintained. All the staff we encountered were most friendly and helpful. We will definitely stay here again. The room was spacious with a good sized bed. Maybe a TV would be lovely. But overall, a great experience and the parking such a bonus! Thank you.
